I am proudly desocialized:
a manifesto on social networking
Social networking can be tedious. We all want to be nice people. The user, blogger, writer, or webmaster of the referring site wants you to note the following: 1 I'm not interested in trading links. 2 I'm unlikely to be interested in being added to your buddy list just to pad your social network. 3 Comments are nice, but not a big deal. I'll comment on your stuff sometimes, and other times I won't. Don't take it personally. I have other interests outside of the internet. 4 Please don't add me to your mailing list, your group messages, or your mass emailing without my permission. 5 I do what I do for free, mostly just to entertain myself. If you get something out of it, great! 6 The things I put online are almost certainly not the whole story of me. If we meet somewhere in the real world, don't assume too much. 7 If I want to meet you in real life, I'll probably be the one to bring it up. Thanks for your interest, but the internet can be a scary place. 8 I often don't answer questions. Don't be offended if I don't answer yours, should you have one. 9 I change, just like everyone else. Don't assume that everything I wrote a year ago is still accurate. Social networking is a good place to be a guerilla. Just being yourself when you have an unmarketable, unfashionable self is revolutionary to some people. |
Not all social networking is bad. We should all have friends. But integrity means something too. Let the world know that you oppose the spread of meaningless social networks.
